As early as 1742, whiskey was being produced at the site of today's distillery. However, the first legal distillery was not founded until 1816 by John Johnston. Located in the south of the island, in close proximity to Ardbeg and Laphroaig, Lagavulin, like its neighbors, produces smoky single malt whisky. The name of the distillery means something like "the
