Rivera Rideau shows how the popular music style reggaetn offers a space for Puerto Rican musicians to express identities that center blackness, forge links across the African diaspora, and critique the popular Puerto Rican discourse of racial democracy, which conceals racism and marginalizes black Puerto Ricans. Puerto Rico is often depicted as a "racial democracy" in which a history of race mixture has produced a racially harmonious society.
